Shekiba joined Camp Afghanistan’s very first program in Ghazni, Afghanistan and is currently studying for her Associate Degree in Legal Practice in Melbourne, Australia

Hey everyone! My name is Shekiba, and I had the privilege of being part of Camp Afghanistan in 2017. Currently, I’m pursuing a law degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to my studies, I have been actively engaged in martial arts. Before moving to Australia for my education, I attended Camp Afghanistan in my hometown of Ghazni.
I studied for part of my high school in Ghazni. While school was a wonderful experience, I noticed significant challenges within the education system. The textbooks and teaching methods were outdated, failing to reflect the current world and modern educational practices. We often faced a severe lack of resources, from basic classroom supplies to access to technology, which hindered our ability to learn effectively. Additionally, the curriculum lacked a global perspective, limiting our understanding of the broader world and our place within it. Despite these obstacles, my classmates and I were determined to pursue our education. We believed that with determination, Afghan girls like me could achieve our full potential and contribute positively to our society.
After moving to Melbourne, I completed my last year of high school and then enrolled at RMIT to study law. I am honored to have accomplished many voluntary opportunities, such as being part of the Greater Dandenong Young Leaders in 2019 and serving as one of the Harmony Ambassadors at my school. Additionally, I participated in The Youth Boot Project, which helped me improve my leadership skills. I have also been active in various virtual programs, such as the Change Makers project, and I am a proud Young Leader of the South East Community Link (SECL) in Melbourne.
Being a part of Camp Afghanistan was an incredibly enriching experience for me. It provided a platform to connect with like-minded Afghan youth, improve my public speaking skills, and foster innovative ideas. The camp emphasized personal growth, self-confidence, and continuous learning, all of which played a pivotal role in my development. Moreover, Camp Afghanistan offered valuable opportunities and resources, including information about scholarships abroad and mentorship programs, to support participants in their pursuit of higher education and personal aspirations. It’s crucial to make enjoyment part of education and forge strong bonds with fellow campers. Not only did this contribute to my personal and professional growth, but it also resulted in cherished memories that I’ll always treasure.
I’m excited to see future campers and their intentions to make a difference globally. Keep making the most of this incredible opportunity and don’t forget to enjoy your time!
